Seattle sound artists Phantom Empire provided a contemporary twist on the sonic materials and the claustrophobic confines of traditional elevator music. Live broadcasts of incidental, sustained and highly amplified sounds, as well as snippets of popular songs, created an aural envelope that transformed the Henry’s elevator. “Elevator Phantom” was a preliminary sound sketch for a Phantom Empire project presented at the Henry in fall, 2002, coinciding with the National Association of Media Arts Centers conference.
