Meditation on a Painting by Diebenkorn

North Galleries

July 12, 2002August 11, 2002

“Meditation” explored how several contemporary works on paper engage, question or problematize a key work in the Henry’s collection, Richard Diebenkorn’s “Unititled (View of the Ocean with Palm Tree)”, from 1958. Color photographs by Adam Bartos and Jack Pierson quote the ambiguous layered space of the painting. Richard Tuttle’s watercolor “Table and Chair” parses the canvas’s color vocabulary; and the lithograph by Sylvia Plimack Mangold focuses on a single detail, the motif of the branching tree.
