Kori Newkirk: To See It All
Central Staircase
January 5, 2003 – December 28, 2003
A year prior, the Los Angeles artist Kori Newkirk worked in residence at the Henry on a beaded curtain image and developed a series of project designs inspired by Seattle’s urban landscapes, including a large-scale site-specific wall installation in hair pomade to be executed in January in the museum’s central staircase.
This unique, temporal installation was produced by Newkirk in situ in the fist weeks of January and remained on view for a year. As Newkirk explains: “My work frequently employs the use of non-traditional materials with specific cultural resonance. In this case, I will use pigment-tinted hair pomade to create a silhouette wall relief that intertwines my own ongoing investigations, combined with impressions of Seattle as a specific locale.”
