15th Avenue Studio #2: The Mechanics of Contemplation
North Galleries
August 3, 1987 – October 4, 1987
Second in the 15th Avenue Studio series, this exhibition was a laboratory approach to supporting new work in the visual arts and exploring issues in contemporary art. Exhibition curator Chris Bruce selected six artists who use different technologies to create environments conducive to contemplation. Artists featured were: Michael Brewster (Los Angeles), who made a synthesizer sound environment; Mineko Grimmer (Los Angeles), who constructed primitive, melting-ice sound structures; Laura Sindell (Seattle), who created Sounds Like Home, a musical house sculpture; Mowry Baden (Victoria, B.C.) who constructed a piece that requires the viewer’s physical engagement and participation; Norie Sato (Seattle) who developed Luminence Zone, an installation utilizing natural and video light; and Gary Hill (Seattle) who created a new video installation.
