Henry Art Gallery Chief Curator Elizabeth Brown developed a concept of the Work of the Work over the two years prior to this exhibition, in an effort to probe the way certain works of art actively engage viewers.
“The Work of the Work” asked audiences to examine their own experience with art while considering that experience in terms of the function of recent art. This exhibition presented a selection of dramatic and deeply moving works by a small group of international artists. By featuring more than a single work by these artists, the exhibition increased audience attention. Viewers were encouraged to focus and therefore more productively engage with the works. Artists included Catherine Yass, Anne Appleby, Hannah Villiger, Callum Innes, Candice Breitz, Steve McQueen, Kim Sooja, Gary Hill, Juan Munoz, James Turrell, Wolfgang Laib, Carsten Holler, Mike Kelley, and Olafur Eliasson.
