Thinking Print: Books to Billboards, 1980-1995
Stroum Gallery
February 19, 1998 – May 3, 1998
The fifteen year period between 1980 and 1995 was a time of vibrant new ideas and techniques in printed art. New formats such as billboards, wallpaper and t-shirts expanded the more traditional print forms including wood cuts, etchings and books. This exhibition, curated by the Museum of Modern Art’s Chief Curator of Prints and Illustrated Books, Deborah Wye, presented over 200 prints by approximately 150 American and European artists from MoMA’s collection.
The survey explored printmaking using new modes of presentation, various techniques and formats. Particular themes included social and political issues, the use of language, incorporation of photography and the presentation of the body. Among the artists included in the exhibition were Barbara Kruger, Kiki Smith, Francesco Clemente, Anselm Kiefer, Jasper Johns, Brice Marden, Christian Boltanski, General Idea and Sherrie Levine.
