Simple Form
Stroum Gallery
November 13, 1997 – February 1, 1998
The rejection of illusion and the physical transformation of space are among the critical concerns of many sculptors. In very simple works, often incorporating ordinary objects without much alteration, artists such as Rachel Whiteread, Felix Gonzalez-Torres and Polly Apfelbaum use minimalist forms and materials to create resonant objects and installations. Appealing to intuition and simultaneously to the sensual and cerebral, their works reshape the gallery experience and make tangible emotion, knowledge, and memory. “Simple Form” included recent works by these artists and others, and explored the post-minimalist aesthetic in contemporary sculpture.
