New Works Laboratory: A Partnership Between 911 Media Arts Center and the Henry Art Gallery
Media Gallery and East Gallery
July 17, 1998 – October 18, 1998
In October 1997, the Henry Art Gallery and 911 Media Arts Center embarked on a collaborative project and created the Digital Artists-In-Residency program. This innovative program paired established visual artists who were working in traditional media with digital artists who were working with new technologies, to create innovative works of art. Funded by a Special Projects grant from the King County Arts Commission, the Digital Artists-In-Residency Program intended to make technology available to artists and the public and to inspire critical thinking and community conversations about the positive and negative impacts of technology upon art and society. The visual artists participating in the program were Doris Chase, Gerard Tsutakawa, and Preston Wadley. The three digital artists were Franklin Joyce, David Owen and Dan Shepherd. A public panel discussion provided a chance for feedback and conversation about the New Works Laboratory exhibition with all of the artists involved in the project.
