Gentle Reader is a conversation between the reader and the book. It is also a collection of essays on publication and a reading group. Gentle readers will convene monthly to discuss the following texts during Shelf Life in the Henry’s Lobby space at 2pm:

The Gentle Reader : Written in 1904 by Samuel McChord Crothers, available online at archive.org and Google books, this text begs the question, “ What has become of the gentle reader?”

The Form of the Book Book : A collection of essays on book design by Catherine de Smet, James Goggin, Jenny Eneqvist, Roland Früh & Corina Neuenschwander, Richard Hollis, Sarah Gottlieb, Chrissie Charlton, Armand Mevis. Edited by Sara De Bondt and Fraser Muggeridge. Second edition copies still available.

Portable Document Format : PDF is the inaugural publication of The Serving Library, produced and published by Dexter Sinister and Sternberg Press, with contributions by Stuart Bailey, Rob Giampietro, Anthony Huberman, J. Christopher Jones, Louis Kaplan, Edgar Allan Poe, Seth Price, David Reinfurt, David Senior, and Giles Weaver. Dexter Sinister is interested in exploring contemporary publishing in its broadest, most exploded sense.

A Reader on Reading : In this collection of his essays, Alberto Manguel argues that the activity of reading, in its broadest sense, defines our species. The essays in this volume explore the craft of reading and writing, the identity granted to us by literature, and the links between politics and books and between books and our bodies.
