In an effort to support the creative minds of our region, The Henry will be hosting a special cast-and-crew screening of Regulate, directed by Seattle filmmaker Nathan Vass.
A departure from traditional methods of cinematic production and the filmmaker’s previous focus on abstraction, Vass utilizes the autonomous film techniques of Pure Cinema to create unconventional narrative structures in his most recent film. Increasingly seen by contemporary artists as the future of film, Pure Cinema allows filmmakers to break beyond the idea that film is merely a storytelling medium. It can be used to present ideas more complex and intangible than what’s possible in storytelling, which usually relies heavily on the spoken word.
With Regulate, the story of a woman breaking free from her ex-husband, Vass does relay a narrative, but without any exposition- the viewer is challenged to piece together the characters and their relationships by their actions and by how the camera observes them.
