Curatorial Internship

The Henry Art Gallery curatorial internships are open to any motivated individual but might appeal particularly to undergraduate students in Museum Studies, Art History, Studio Art, Design, and CHID programs who have completed, with demonstrable success, at least one year of academic work. Internships are unpaid and require a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week.

The experience provides an introduction to the world of contemporary art, professional museum practices, and training in numerous aspects of researching, planning, and mounting museum exhibitions. The internships are an excellent opportunity for students considering a museum profession.

Generally, three curatorial internships are offered each year. The fall/winter internship begins in September and ends in March, the spring internship begins in March and ends in June, and the summer internship begins in June and ends in August.

Duties focus on the following areas:

1. Research: assisting with exhibition and project research in libraries, via the internet, by telephone, and correspondence.
2. Archiving: assisting with compiling and maintaining of exhibition, project, and installation photography archives.
3. Data entry and proposal maintenance: assisting with entry of artist and exhibition proposals into existing database, preparing meeting reports, facilitating meetings, and drafting follow-up letters.
4. Correspondence: assisting with departmental correspondence, including mailings, individual communication, faxes, and email.
5. Exhibition and departmental support: providing general support for many aspects of the exhibition process; assisting with exhibition checklist preparation; and general departmental clerical support.

Academic credit may be available. It is the responsibility of the student. Graduate students interested in opportunities at the Henry should contact the curatorial department for information on in-depth research and practicum availability.

Summer Internships

Call for applications opens April 28, 2008 and closes June 6, 2008. The internships will begin around June 16, 2008 and continue until September 5, 2008. Students on a semester schedule have the option of interning from May 27, 2008 through August 15, 2008. If your college ends in May, please submit your application by May 14, 2008. Please note that some interns will be chosen in advance of the May 27 start date.

Summer internship responsibilities will include working on the museum's new permanent collection website modules. Duties will include independently researching a variety of topics, including the work of individual artists, and researching photographic techniques. Other tasks include conducting interviews, writing for the website, and presenting research to the curatorial staff. Strong writing and research skills are a must. Interns will have a special opportunity to attend informal lectures by select Henry staff members who will present information about how specific departments function within the museum as a whole.

All applications require:
1. Cover letter stating why you are interested in interning at this art museum
2. Resume with three references
3. Writing sample with an art historical or visual arts topic (under 3 pages)
4. Special assignment: choose an art museum website and analyze it. Write a short essay (under 2 pages) explaining how this website engages its audience (i.e., you) as well as how it appropriately and effectively represents the institution.
